Did You Know...
Hikers in the back country should watch out for bears. You can wear little bells to warn bears of your presence and you can carry pepper spray. You should watch for signs of bears: Black bear droppings will be full of berries and seeds, and Grizzly bear droppings will be full of little bells and smell like pepper.
- This means this is a dog friendly area
Did You Know. . . . If You Come Across a Mountain Lion - Stay calm. Talk calmly yet firmly to it. Stop or back away slowly. Do not run. Raise your arms to appear larger. If the lion behaves aggressively, throw stones, branches, or whatever you can get your hands on without crouching down or turning your back. Fight back if a lion attacks you. Lions have been driven away by prey that fights back.
Did You Know... When a bear hibernates, its metabolism drops to half its normal rate and its heart beats only 8 to 10 times per minute. Unlike other animals who hibernate, the bear's body temperature remains high and it will not rouse to eat, drink, urinate or defecate.
Did You Know... The Grizzly Bear is classified as an endangered species in Colorado.
Did You Know.... Black Bears eat 600 pounds Of birdseed, berries and ants to keep their huge bodies going.
Did You Know.... Niwot Ridge has been designated an International Biosphere Preserve by the United Nations for arctic and alpine research. Some of the strongest winds ever recorded in North America occur here. Winds in excess of 160 miles an hour are not uncommon.
Did You Know... Chipmunks are very curious creatures and will often approach you. Please, do not feed the chipmunks or, for that matter, any wildlife. Also, allowing the chipmunks to crawl on you can be very dangerous, as they will bite and can be carriers of the hanta-virus or bubonic plaque.
